NUS Lion Dance, NUS Ilsa Tari and NUS Blast! gathered together for a short performance at the Law Faculty on 19 May. It was a fun and enjoyable time because the dancers had chance to interact with each other, discussing about the AYG dance steps.

The hirer was very happy with the 3 performances, especially the Lion Dance, as the audience comprising of foreign guests were very taken by the art which they were seeing for the first time. We took pictures with our guests to remembrance and you can tell from the smiling faces that all of our dancers took to the limelight very well!

Behind the Scenes Special

On a humid Friday night, dance representatives from our 6 dance groups gathered in the CFA Dance Theatre for the Dance Reflections: Body Language photo shoot. While the Group Managers got busy at laying the white butcher sheets on the floor, readying the venue for the shoot, the dancers took great care in putting on their black and gold ensemble.

On a personal note, this was my first time experiencing a photoshoot - it was definitely much more complicated than I thought! We had to make do with kino flos borrowed from kind NUStudios; who helped out with the moving of the lights. The managers even had to physically move standing fans from UCC in case we needed them! Photographer Kuang JingKai took it in his stride and clicked test photos with gusto, preparing for the long night ahead.

After observing the dancers, the managers ruefully realised that the colours were not uniformed enough. The result - dancers had to change into a totally black ensemble there and then! I must say that I really appreciated the dancers for being open-minded and accomodating, we decided and went on with the group photo in all black and a long red cloth.

The individual photos turned out breathtaking - jump shots which captured the essence of movement by the dancers. I'm not showing you the pictures here - You look out for our posters and flyers! :) The continuous jumping made the dancers rather exhausted, but there was the feeling of euphoria when the photos turned out on the photographer's laptop.

We do not get many opportunities to have all 6 dance groups in a setting like this; and thus we made full use of it. The dancers were made to pose next to each other in the group photo; and mind you, the poses were not easy! By the end of the night, Chinese Dance Rep Kai Lin had an aching neck and back, Synergy's Ethlyn was red-eyed and Dance Ensemble's Rachel looked visibly drained. The only man in the team looked the most radiant - NUS Ilsa Tari's Zuraimi (guess why? *grin*)

Student Leaders' Retreat 09

Day 2. 14 May 2009

The student leaders arrived for another new day of the Retreat; first tucking into breakfast while exchanging ideas and experiences with each other. What I noted on the 2nd day was that the students were more relaxed and comfortable to members of different groups, some of them were already discussing potential future collaborations!

The representatives from all the various departments in CFA proceeded to talk about their areas of concern; starting off with Programmes. Assistant Director Karen informed the leaders about the important dates in the academic year; of proposals that had to be submitted for approval and the potential of collaborative efforts.

Marketing Communications manager Dinah then briefed all about the publicity collaterals, marketing and ticketing aspects of organising a concert. Assistant Director Betty of Business Development then showed that despite being a one-woman department, she was more than willing to answer queries pertaining to sponsorships and donations.

Museum representative Asst. Director Nam Leng showed a series of exciting photographs and explored the opportunity of using the Museum as a performance venue. After which, Gevin from Productions went on to elaborate more on the nitty gritty details of technical requirements and administration.

The highlight of the day had to be the group discussion of the whole year work plan. The groups got down and serious about this as they realised how much planning had to go into their work in the coming academic year. There were some groups who planned pages after pages of work (eg. NUS Ilsa Tari), and there were some who chose to draw diagrams on a white board (NUS Blast!). No matter what form of presentation was chosen, the groups sure had a fulfilling time together; I do look forward to see all these planning take shape and take flight!

5 groups were chosen to present their work plans to all - Dance Ensemble, Choir, Ilsa Tari, Blast! and Wind Symphony. I could see the audience nodding their heads in approval, or have their brows knitted in deep thought. The 5 groups provided an insight to their work; impressing the CFA Executive Committee members (Director Christine, CFO Kian Chee and Deputy Director Ju Li) who came down to show their support.

The SLR 09 ended off with a BBQ buffet by the poolside; a wonderful chance for all leaders to sit down for a meal together and to interact with CFA Staff.

Student Leaders' Retreat 09

Day 1. 13 May 09

Originally slated to commence on the 14th at The Chevrons, the NUS CFA Student Leaders' Retreat was changed to start on the 13 May instead; due to the H1N1 virus and its implications.

The leaders arrived in style and received nice door gifts, notes and files from our friendly Group Management Staff. What they did not expect, was that they were cunningly separated to ensure for 2 days, the leaders will work and play together with people they were not familiar with.

CFA's deputy director Ju Li kicked off the day with a light-hearted introduction about the organisation and staff; peppered with interactive questions to the floor. The students commented that they now knew more about CFA other than group management staff, and that it really was very beneficial.

Our dynamic speaker and facilitator from High Achievers took over and conducted half a day of very interesting activities and talks. I witnessed some of the leaders religiously taking notes and some nodding in silence; as they attentively soaked up the essence of leadership and other life skills during the presentations.

The teamwork games were part of the day that the leaders obviously enjoyed, judging based on their responses and high energy. The one about passing a silent message through a long line of student leaders was probably the most memorable - the pictures say it all.

There were a number of group discussions, which helped the leaders understand better about the NUS CFA Vision and Mission much better; of course, some had finished earlier and went on to socialise with peers from different groups.

The mouth-watering food was something that nobody had complaints about; everybody had their fill while having a chat over coffee/tea break. Overheard at the breaks and lunch were student exchanges on concert organising experiences and training anecdotes.

The day ended off with Group Management Assistant Director Mona's presentation about organising events and funding from CFA. The student leaders sat straight up and listened intently to this as the information was very important and useful.

Silence during the Exams and Updates

It has been a very silent month at the CFA studios; with the occasional study group congregating at the conference table.

The examinations have just ended, and we look forward to the hustle bustle at the Studios again! Groups are now preparing for engagements, Asian Youth Games 09 opening dance display, concerts and the Student Leaders' Retreat!

This Friday evening, we look forward to having a much anticipated Dance Reflections: Body Language photo shoot at the Dance Theatre.

NUS Choir and NUSSO are preparing for their big gig at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for Video Games Live! Gamers alert, this is one concert definitely not to be missed!

Last Saturday, the NUS Dance Ensemble participated in the Get Your Sexy Back Moderate Drinking Campaign at the Heeren Building. The feisty dancers performed twice, once at 2pm and another time at 6pm. They moved to a remix of the song Sway, impressing the public who were around.

The GYSB campaign was targeted at youth to promote responsible drinking and to stop the bad habit of binge drinking. That is to say, drinking is fine but please only do it in moderation.

Our dancers looked picture perfect during a photo-taking session in between performances while waiting for their turns. We had so much fun taking the pictures and exclaiming we found the perfect "photo studio"!

Obviously, they did not need 2 beers to look cool!

NUS Piano Ensemble's Touch '09 Concert @ Esplanade - A note from the Photographer

This was an interesting assignment, because Esplanade has been one of the mysterious places in Singapore that I had always wanted to explore. As I was guided by one of the crew to enter, there is a beehive-like kind of maze there that I will never find my way the first time without a guide.

First thing I did was to explore the performance area to look for angles and opportunities. I felt at ease because I am working with my friends from NUS Piano Ensemble, and that made it easier for me to get closer to them to get the most natural shots.
You have no idea how this whole place look like by only looking at this photo. I am not going to reveal everything (for security reason) :P.

I took about 500 shots during the rehearsal, knowing that this is the only chance for me to take some really close up shots and get closer with the performers.

Everyone looks so smart and glamorous after they dressed up.

After the shots at rehearsals, I took a nap in the performers’ room and waited for my friend whom I invited for the show. The music is amazing, it was totally different from what I heard while shooting at the rehearsal, and I could pay attention to the melody, and breathe together with the music.

I was explaining to my friend, which guy is my mentor in keyboarding, who are the engaged couple, and how good these people are. Yeah, it was natural that my NUSPE friends seemed a bit nervous having a full house for the night, but overall it was still a great show!

CFA Appreciation Nite 09

Last friday evening, CFA Staff, tutors and student leaders of the performing groups committee gathered for a night of appreciation and good food. The annual CFA Appreciation Nite 09 was held at the CFA Studios Auditorium; with groups getting recognition for the hard work put in during the past year.

NUS Centre For the Arts Director Ms. Christine Khor addressed and thanked all for the good work put in the past academic year, adding that being in the Arts is definitely spritually rewarding. It was also announced that the theme for NUS Arts Festival 2010 has been fixed as "Through Asian Lens", as excited whispers were heard all around.

Certificates were then given out to recognise and award groups who have put in much effort in their performances and shows; the leaders came up one by one to receive the awards from Ms. Yeow Ju Li, our Deputy Director.

After the certificates had been given out, all were treated to a sumptuous spread and we had a great time catching up with each other, exchanging ideas about performances or just having a good laugh.

The night ended off with some of the leaders who just could not bear to leave and stood around taking memorable shots. As CFA Staff Mr. Tan Keng Khoon puts it, this was a night that all will remember as a an unforgettable and priceless experience spent with friends, something the student leaders will take away and cherish in time to come.

NUS Chinese Dance @ ACM's Manchu Mania!

The NUS Chinese Dance group performed at the Asian Civilisation Museum's Manchu Mania! event last weekend. The event was held in conjunction with the opening Kangxi exhibition by ACM.

The dancers wore Qing dynasty costumes complete with pigtails for the guys and ancient high heels for the girls, performing their piece from Dance Reflections 2008. They sashayed and leapt around in front of a huge portrait of Kangxi emperor, bringing to mind Qing court dancers.

The audience were visibly enthralled by the dancers and the eyes of the children present were fixated upon the colourful costumes worn. After the dance items; our dancers kept getting requests from the audience to pose for photos with them. One of our alumni dancers even joked that the dancers should pose for an extra buck! Of course, the dancers were game and spontaneous, posing readily (and of course free of charge :P) with the excited guests upon request.

One of the ACM staff, Raj, remarked that he was impressed by the dancers, especially the male dancers who showed their prowess in the guys segment. It was informative and educational for the guests who turned up for the performance at the Shaw foyer at the museum; it could be the first time for some of them to see a Qing court dance!

In between the performances, the dancers relaxed in the dressing room and made friends with the little wushu performers from the event!

NUS Piano Ensemble's Touch '09 Concert @ Esplanade

At the Esplanade Recital Studio last night, NUS Piano Ensemble put up their annual concert to a full house. The Guest-of-Honour for the event was Mr. Richard Adams, Head of Music, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

It was a carefully planned concert by the group, which resulted in a tight production and wonderful performance. The exciting repertoire kept the audience glued to the pianists with their fingers skilfully gliding across the keyboards.

I could tell from the smiles the pianists gave each other as signs of encouragement and acknowledgements that they have put in many hours of hard work together to achieve that kind of good teamwork. Indeed, it was breathtaking for me personally because this is probably the first double piano concert I have watched.

It was very unfortunate, though, that one of NUSPE's tutors, Ms. Soon, injured her arm and was unable to play last night as I was really looking forward to that performance. As the NUSPE members took their curtain call at the end of the show, the audience gave them a rousing applause for a good night of piano music.

NAF 09: State of Emergency by NUS Ilsa Tari and NUS EML

At this spectacular joint performance put up last Friday, the dancers from NUS Ilsa Tari and NUS Electronic Music Lab dazzled the audience with surprises. This project also involved video artist Shaun Koh and Panasonic who sponsored TV sets for the show.

I warmed up in my seat at the beginning of the performance, expecting to see traditional Malay dance steps to electronic music. As the music started playing and dancers moved out from backstage, I found myself glued to them from beginning, right up to the end. I had not expected Malay Dance to be this modern and so well-choreographed (by well-known choreographer Cikgu Osman) to creative electronic music (partly performed by the NUS EML members from the 2nd level balcony), honestly, I was impressed.

Even the audience were tickled by the black humour that was evident in the video clips, music and dance. The cheeky arrangement of grinning dancers being pushed out on trolleys and pushcarts showed how we are all in this green movement, and loving it for various reasons.

The most compelling part of the performance was the extremely unexpected dancers appearing at the sides of the audience, succesfully startling them a little. This interaction was especially poignant in bringing the message across.

EMCC: Fiesta Rondalla @ UCC Dance Studio

It was a full-house audience who sat in for an entertaining night of Rondalla music at the Exxon-Mobil Campus Concert held last night. The NUS Rondalla, together with Dr. Joseph Peters their instructor, put up a delightful show last night at the UCC Dance Studio. Due to the layout of the performance area, the audience was able to get up close and personal with the performers while they strummed and played.

The concert had four parts; Main Rondella Performance, a showcase of student-arranged works, Trainee Rondella Performance and Guest Performance. The Main Rondella consisting of mostly seniors and alumni members put up an impressive show of their technique. My favourite would have to be their rendition of Persian Market, which was lively and reminded one of a happy, festive celebration.

The guest performers were from Tango Ensemble, a group of 4 NUS Alumni who showed off their prowess on their respective instruments. It was enjoyable as well as educational, because it was my first time listening to live Tango music.

What struck me most about this performance was probably the type of instruments used. One hardly gets to see such unique instruments in music performances - such as the Tipakangklung, which is supposedly the only set still used for performance now. It was definitely enriching to hear about the various instruments played during the show and I must thank NUS Rondalla for this entertaining show.

Beyond Yesterday

In November 2008, the NUS Chinese Dance alumni choreographic team met up to decide on the theme for our EMCC performance. In less than 3 months’, we presented Retrospect.

In the 1-hour long performance, NUS Chinese Dance transported the audience back to the yesteryears, a time and space filled with happy, sad, loving and agonizing memories. As 1 of the 6 alumni choreographers, I choreographed yes-THE days, an item inspired by the Japanese film, Always, San-chōme no yūhi. Stimulated by certain images, sounds or smell, people may feel nostalgic for the past; but is this longing not for a (constructed) past that has been romanticized and idealized? Combining video and dance, the 8-minute item revolves around the notion of memory, highlighting memory as a construct, a perception, an imagination.

The path to producing a dance was a fun yet challenging process. From the filming of raw footages, to editing, and to combining the video with dance, I have enjoyed every single moment spent with my team (dancers and video editor) despite the numerous obstacles that came along the way. Being in the dual role of dancer and choreographer also meant more time spent in the dance studio practicing, and longer hours in the theater doing lights plotting and blocking. On the other hand, it also meant more bonding time with my dance-mates which is always the most memorable part of the performance experience.

I believe all the dancers and choreographers have enjoyed EMCC 09 as much as I had, and I really look forward to working with them again! Special thanks to the NUS Museum for granting our request to film on their grounds.

NUS Piano Ensemble gave a rousing performing last Saturday at the UCC Foyer last night with a wide range of repertoire from classical to jazz. The informal show held in the open foyer allowed audience to be comfortably seated at Nicole's sipping beverages while enjoying the soothing piano music.

The pianists gave renditions of familiar jazz songs and despite being at such close distance from the audience, appeared very confident.

NAF Fringe Event: Harmonica Ensemble Performance @ UCC Courtyard 28/2

It was a cool, breezy night after showers in the late afternoon. Just the right mood and setting for a relaxing outdoor performance.

I arrived at the venue a little early and was pleasantly surprised to see a harmonica-selling booth being set up at the courtyard. These were no ordinary harmonicas on sale, mind you, but 1 inch harmonica-keychains! I was indeed tempted to buy one and try it out to see if I would choke on it while attempting a song.

The performance delighted a full-house audience, who were clapping gleefully and soaking up the atmosphere. The show-stealer was Weiming, NUSHO's tutor, who performed on the 1 inch harmonica without hands! We could all tell that the audience were awed by this, judging by the cheers that preceded the special surprise item.

EMCC: Retrospect by NUS Chinese Dance

Last night was a night of celebrating childhood innocence through dance. NUS Chinese Dance's Exxon Mobil Campus Concert (EMCC) showcased works by 6 different alumni members, performed by mainly juniors in the team. There were entertaining and fun items which drew laughter from the audience who were visibly tickled.

My favourite item had to be Catharsis, choreographed by NUS Chinese Dance alumnus Sophia Sng. It was a breathtaking piece, with unpredictable choreography and strong dance techniques -- I could feel the strong emotions through their enrapturing and gripping moves. Another personal favourite of mine was Invisibility, where traditional Chinese Dance fans were used together with contemporary choreography.

The creative curtain call certainly had that element of surprise which delighted the audience. It was choreographed as a scene in a museum, which was true to the concert theme of Retrospect.

Varsity Voices 2009 - 21 Feb

At the sell-out concert performed by NUS Choir last Saturday, the audience were treated to angelic sacred songs and also impressive renditions.

The first half of the concert included hymns and sacred songs; I thought I had died and gone to heaven, with angels serenading me with those lovely voices. The guest choir from Victoria JC and Victoria Chorale too impressed with their powerful vocals; judging from the cheers and loud applause from the audience.

My favourite number had to be Cloudburst, the climax of the concert. With creative props and exciting lighting, NUS Choir conductor Mr. Nelson Kwei led the choir effortlessly in this wonderful item. This interactive performance even gave the audience a chance to participate, creating sound effects by snapping our fingers.

Varsity Voices 2009 ended off on a high note, with Mr. Nelson Kwei reminding all that Year 2010 would be the NUS Choir's 30th Anniversary. I look forward to seeing NUS Choir's grand performance and celebration next year!

NUS Rondalla Performance @ NTU Heritage Week

The NUS Rondalla was invited today by the NTU Heritage Week organisers to perform at the Canopy outside LT1A. Soothing and light music enchanted those who were there and brought to mind images of elves and fairies in the woods. So impressed were the organisers that they invited NUS Rondalla for another round of performance on Wednesday 18 Feb!

The NUS Rondalla will be having their EMCC show Fiesta Rondalla on 4 Mar, at the UCC Dance Studio. Be there to support, experience and hear them!

NAF Roadshow @ City Hall Photos!

Have a peek at the Roadshow last Friday!

It was a warm sunny day, a typical lunch rush hour at City Hall, Raffles City. A group of dedicated student musicians and staff gathered to garner support from the working crowd here; a publicity event with Lush 99.5FM.

The curious onlookers were attracted by the jazzy tunes of the student musicians. That was Eng Kwang on the saxophone, and also representatives of the Electronic Music Lab in the background. WE also had a special performance by Siegfried (from NUSPE) on the recorder!

Of course, the staff and student helpers were busy weaving in and out of the lunch crowd giving out our publicity leaflets and talking to the public about the upcoming NAF '09.

NAF '09 Roadshow with Lush 99.5 FM @ City Hall

To increase public awareness on our NUS Arts Festival 2009, we had a roadshow today @ City Hall today during lunchtime. There were exciting and entrancing performances put up by our talented students, giving the public a sneak preview of NAF 2009. A few lucky members of the public were also given free tickets to NAF performances during the Quiz session. Photos of the Roadshow will be up very soon! Keep your eyeballs glued here!

The CFA blog will be undergoing a series of changes; the first change that is going to happen is the author of this blog.

Hi, before I forget to introduce myself. I'm Christabel, the new addition to the CFA group management team; this blog is a reflection and retrospection of events and activities happening right here in CFA and thus I am inviting all CFA-ians to email me photos, short essays, interviews, reports, videos etc etc for me to upload here.

After all, this blog is yours! :)

15 fun things to do at CFA... and feel free to add on!

The semester is going to an end. Before the exams kick in, let's have a more fun article - here are a list of "fun" things to do at CFA - that makes it a "uniquely-CFA".

I wrote this article long time ago but was lost in somewhere in my desktop. I know it is a bit late, but I wish to tribute this article to the committee members 07-08 of all groups!

Here it is...

1. Pasting stickers for the errors in Artzone magazine/ posters

2. Revision at CFA Studios – you can even talk, eat, buy drinks at vending machine, plug in & use PC and lie down on sofa for a while – all within 5m radius

3. Photocopying scores for a 100-strong orchestra

4. And listening to all juicy conversation/frustrating screams from various managers while you are photocopying

5. Calling up sponsors/schools with the manager’s phone – she is staring at the computer but can’t help observing your conversational skills

6. Holding a top-secret committee meeting (or sometimes fighting) at the CFA big conference table – right outside your manager’s office

7. Making a Milo-dinosaur, and an artwork made with biscuits for FREE during Genesis camp

8. Counting concert ticket money with your manager – a total of at least $8000 with mostly $10, $5, $2 notes and sometimes even coins

9. Stealing biscuits from the staff pantry

10. Playing toys/eating sweets/staring the mess at various managers' desks

11. Pretending to be "puss-in-boot" and keep knocking at the office door during lunchtime and after 6pm (and remember, it's 5.30pm on Fridays!)

12. Putting up a live performance for the rest of the “audience” in office when discussing “life-and-death” issues with your manager

13. Hacking the “Tap-your-Matri-card-or-you-can’t-open-this-door” system late at night or during weekends in a low-tech way by using objects to block the sensors

14. Practice singing/playing instruments with the sound-proof door opened

15. Doing photoshop editing and have a taste of the staff’s really-not-so-fast computers

The holidays have started but CFA Studios is still busy since early 8am! That was because on 2-4 June, 18 dancers from our various dance groups have gathered to participate the ProviDANCE Camp! This is part of the collaboration between CFA and SDT, and the camp aims to teach various skills to be a choreographer!

Since it's early at 8am, the dancers started the day with an hour long warm up! Here are some of the snapshots...

Silvia, (Lady in black, centre) was one of the trainers for this camp.

Dancers said, "Her warm-ups were definitely no-joke!"

And some hopping and jumping...

Our Director, Christine and Deputy Director, JuLi also joined the dancers for lunch to support this event!

CFA has such nice views? Neh... the dancers were fortunate to have a trip down to SDT training studios, and therefore, here they were at Fort Canning Park!

The other two trainers from SDT summarized what they have learnt so far!

Then, our dancers were so excited to meet David Dawson (in blue) to exchange ideas on how to create strong and impact choreography work, that is meaningful to both dancers and the audience.

We also had a chance to witness the rehearsal for A Million Kisses to my Skin by David Dawson. We were sitted real close with the dancers (and decided that it was not nice to take photos). Our dancers were so impressed with the professionalism of the SDT dancers - "I believe I've never been as tired as the SDT dancers in my whole life!"

Day 3 was the result time! These were the works by our student choreographers.

Second day of the Retreat was an "Solid-planning day"! But of course, it was not entirely dry...

Some quick IQ test to wake up the brains!

An 2 hour session of (Strength - Weakness - Opportunities - Threats) SWOT Analysis, Mission and Vision; Goals and Objectives planning. It was really not easy, but we knew that it was essential!

Everyone started sitting on the floor and brainstorm the characteristics of their own group during SWOT Analysis...

Some groups managed to grab the sofa set...

... While some even got a table...

... and Symphony Orhcestra decided to analyse and plan with their manager, Siew Ling!

Chinese Orchestra presented their SWOT Analysis. Many of the other groups were nodding away as there are some weaknesses that every group shares.

Then, after a serious brainstorming session, let's have L-U-N-C-H!

All the girls seemed to be enjoying each other's company and the salad!

All of them were sitting with our staff.

After the hearty lunch, we had a forum with the CFA management...

Of course the groups grabbed this golden opportunity to ask many questions. Some were rather interesting and beneficial to all. Questions ranged from financial assistance in overseas trips to exploring modular credits for being a CFA member.

Next, we had another important session - "How to manage your events?" - with help from Daniel (far back, man in grey shirt) from Production Services and Karen from Programmes (Left, standing, leaning by the wall)

... and another session of TEA!

Although no photos were taken, we then had a session of NAF09 brainstorming. Many groups came up with very unique and interesting ideas of collaboration. Watch out for our NUS Arts Festival 2009!

Student Retreat - a 2-day training workshop for CFA group leaders - finally took place on 15-16 May this year!

The first day of the retreat was proved to be a full day packed with fun and laughter (and of course we learnt useful skills too)!

Everyone was anticipate to find out what to expect for the day!

And... our leaders started mingling with each other BEFORE the ice-breaker!

After each of them to groups, they paid full attention with Jacey, who was explaining how this complicated competitive ice-breaker was going to be like...

Luckily, we had Eng Kuang, former exco of Jazz Band to help us facilitating the game!

Ok, so... HOW TO PLAY?

In short, various groups were supposed to buy and collect lost exhibitions (in card form, of course!) and return to various museums (shown on game map) in Singapore.

So how to advance in the game map and win? You could either pay and become the museum owner - each time an exhibit is returned you got to advance; or simply collect the exhibits and return to various museums to more forward!

Of course it was not that easy...

First, you have to earn money so that you can buy and collect exhibits... Go to Juwita/ Sheila and be tested out on some music/dance/drama related knowledge!

Then, you could see many groups coming together, trying to negotiate with each other, so that they could collect the "complete" exhibit - you must collect all 4 exhibit cards before you can return to the museum.

Then, it was like a MARKET! All the groups were frantically fighting to return exhibits to the museums (with iris at the bottom of the pic, trying her best to update museum status and the game map) so that they could advance in the game!

As you could see from their faces - this group didn't win but they could have - cos they were too busy collecting the exhibits that they didn't have enough time to return to the museums!

... and this group won! They were very smart - they earned, and paid to become the owners of MOST museums. Then, all they did was just to help others complete the exhibit cards, wait for the exhibits to be returned by others, gain spaces and WIN!

Then, we had a workshop by external professionals - teaching us on team dynamics and communication skills!

Here they were - looking bright and happy early morning!

First, they started with another round of ice-breakers, which made all of us running around and grouping in pairs...

in groups of 3s... and many more!

Of course, there were definitely some who didn't manage to get into groups, and here was the forfeit - running across the carpet in an interesting way - this girl volunteered to do a chicken dance!

Next, it was the most challenging part of the workshop. All our students were divided into 3 teams to compete with one another. Each group were supposed to send out 2 leaders to brief the rest on what the game was like... and that's all the instructions were given!

HOW TO PLAY

Within each team, all members were seated in two lines, with 3 vacant chairs connecting the two lines, forming a horse-shoe shape.

To win, they must step-by-step, shift the people on the left side to be seated to the right side, and vice versa.

Of course, the challenging part was that each member was only allowed to move to the adjacent vacant chair, or jump to the next vacant chair (if there was a person in between) and at any one time, if there were two people belonged to the same side seating side-by-side during the shifting stage, the game had to restart!

One group decided to discuss and try it out first with the some non-living objects...

... while another group chose to move a few people, then discuss about it when they got stuck.

Finally, this group found the way to complete the game! And they wrote down the lessons learnt from this (can be very frustrating) game.

Then, all 60 student leaders gathered back into one big group to accomplish one task - to shift this long pipe up and down, with one person contributing two index fingers each!

Again, this game only seemed easy. Along the way, you would start to realize, to have all 60 people to be synchronized in one timing, one movement were much more difficult than you thought!

And this workshop ended with some nice massage to each other's shoulder...

... and a cute fun mass dance!

Then, LUNCH TIME! Food was fantastic!

After lunch, we decided to arrange a tour in the Art House for the students - to let them know more about this building - The Arts House.

They went to the most historically significant space of The Arts House - Chamber - where the former parliamentary meetings and debates took place.

Then, they toured around the Play Den - a black box theatre; the Gallery - a glass hall with frequent visual arts exhibition; and the Council Room - the room with highest order, formerly occupied by our Minister Mentor, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
And they said, "Why not a tour and dinner at '1827' as well?" Oh, how expensive was that!

Following that, Mr Iskandar Ismail has kindly offered us a talk on stage presentation - how we present ourselves on stage is very important. Christine, our Director also gave us some tips on this topic, too!

Finally, we had a discussion for the NUS Arts Festival 2009. Many conductors and choreographers came down especially for it, and here is a photo of the busy musicians we managed to catch after the discussion (Of course more than 4 conductors/choreographers attanded! But most were gone before we knew it!)

Indian Dance Workshop with Ms Malavika Mohanan

On the 12th of April, members of NUS Indian Dance attended a workshop conducted by Malavika Mohanan. She is trained in bharatanatyam and is based in California. In the recent years she has been exploring as many traditions of movement as have come her way. During the workshop, we learnt a completely new way of expressing emotions by our movements. No matter what dance background we were from, we could feel the peace and serenity brought about by the movements of her dance.

During the workshop, we formed our own dance movements by bringing together ideas from everyone, thus producing an amalgam of traditional movements, which in itself was a new movement altogether.

We also saw a small performance piece by Ms Mohanan herself where she put text into her dance along with music. It was mesmerising to see someone so flawlessly expressing her emotions!

Chinese Drama - Watching "The Soldier and his Virtuous Wife", Apr 08

The Soldier and his Virtuous Wife - Review

Members from the NUS Chinese Drama were treated to a hilarous performance of The Theatre Practice's latest chinese comedy drama "The Soldier and his Virtuous Wife" on 8 April 2008.

Set in the context of ancient China with stylised Chinese opera costume and makeup, the show played with modern elements such as an animated LED monitor board in their set to comic effect.

Although the script originated from Taiwan, the performance was given a new local twist with the introduction of hokkien speech and even subtle references to local movie "881" and its getai elements. It was truly a masterpiece of fusion between the modern and the traditional!

The lead roles were played by Joanna Dong (as Mei Ying aka the Virtuous Wife) and Ric Liu (as Qiu Hu aka the newlywed groom who was conscripted to the army just a day after his wedding). The former also played the lead role of "Rose" in The Theatre Practice's sold out music "If There're Seasons..." and the latter, who put up a commendable performance considering it is his first musical role, is one third of local music group Dreamz FM.

After one year of hard work, it's finally time for the various committee to celebrate their achievement!

Here are our 3 groups who had the top ticket sales during NUS Arts Festival!

First Prize - NUS Wind Symphony with 900 tickets sold! The whole committee were so proud of themselves!

Second Prize - NUS Chinese Orchestra with 822 tickets sold!
(Oops, that was a CFA staff rep instead)

Right - VP of NUSCO was happy to find out the result! :)

Third Prize - NUS Choir with 796 tickets sold.

Next, we gave out prizes for groups who had outstanding publicity materials...

Electronic Music Lab! Their programme booklets were stuffed into test tube - how it suits the concert title, Potion!

NUS Symphony Orchestra! The bright orange bird definitely attracted much attention!

And finally, NUS Wind Symphony! It was indeed much hard work put in as they turned our CFA Library inside-out to find ancient old photos for their 40th Anniversary special programme booklet.

Special mention, Ang Siao Ming from NUS Symphony Orchestra! He has led not only the Orchestra, but represented all CFA groups to discuss with NUSSU on various occasions regarding CCA points. Though the battle goes on, Siao Ming definitely made a very big step for all our groups!

Hope Siao Ming likes the little bear and the wine!

And we specially invited our baby group, NUS Stage to join us in the celebration and also to talk to our Director, Christine and Deputy Director, Ju Li for their great plans ahead!

Finally this semi-informal prize-giving ceremony has finished - and the staff started fighting!

Haha... again, we never managed to take photos of the catered food! It was just finished TOO FAST!

I'm sure almost everyone on campus have seen our NAF publicity banners and images.

This year's Festival has a unique medical focus and some programmes marry Arts + Medicine. Hence, our publicity materials featured poses of "doctors", "nurses" and "patients" for the music, dance, films and literary arts segments!

These models are actually our very own CFA group members. Let's find out more about our volunteer models and take a peek at some photos taken during the photoshoot that have never been released before!

Almost like the "spokesman" for NAF 08, the above image has been seen EVERYWHERE - festival guide cover, artzone cover, huge banners, lamp-post flags, UCC glass door label...
Felipe just joined the Choir this academic year as an exchange student (post-graduate).

"When it first appeared as the Artzone cover, I was like 'WAHO, this is me!'. Then, every friend started asking me, 'Is that really you?' And then finally, I had weird gazes from other students when I was just simply waiting for shuttle buses, with lamp-post flags of my image right above me. What a wonderful surprise I had during this one year in NUS!" - Felipe

Chris the photographer kept telling Kurien "Please don't laugh... stay still", while he himself was laughing because of the amusing scene - Doctor holding an iron.

Let me tell you why. We wanted him to hold a real defibrillator - but alas, the mobile defibrillator was not suitable. So... we thought that he could hold an iron, and we insert the real defibrillator in photoshop. And, ya... you know this plan has failed unfortunately!

Every year, NAF showcases the arts through creative partnerships with the various faculties within NUS and also external industries. This year, CFA has injected a unique medical focus into the festival and some programmes marry Arts + Medicine.

Dear all

I’m so glad to be contributing to the blog! As Director of CFA, I get to work in a fun and creative environment with passionate people like yourselves. My friends always think that I have the best job as I am in a job which fulfils my passion for the arts. I have always loved the arts and am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in that environment. As an ex-Straits Times journo, I was a dance critic and saw everything and anything that moved onstage for over a decade. Later on, I joined the Economic Development Board (EDB) and was tasked to promote the arts industry as a pioneer.

I remember my days as a student... I used to take part in literary and arts stuff on top of Hall activities in Eusoff College. University days were fun and memorable and I’m sure you must be enjoying yourselves too.

As a grandmother now, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and I bring my family to arts events at UCC and they get to experience and understand what I do at work. To chill out, I meditate to clear my mind and refocus my energy positively and spend hours watching dance. I love classical music & visual arts so I am really in a good place at CFA. The arts is a chosen field. It is a total commitment and I hope you are enjoying the path you chose as much as I am!

Performing in the Esplanade Concert Hall was as exhilarating as it was daunting. I don’t know if it’s just me (seeing as how the seniors have had so much more experience), but I seriously was awed by the constant thought that I was playing IN ESPLANADE!

The practices towards this performance was tough. Mainly because many of us who were rehearsing for Beautiful Sunday were at the same time practicing for our annual concert. So a typical Saturday practice would start at 12 and only end at 6! Not that I’m complaining - I loved the practices!

I also remember vividly the ride to Esplanade on the back of the lorry. Trying to drink tea, Ruo Fei clinging for dear life to the side of the lorry….etc

Before we knew it, concert was over and striking began

Riding at the back of the lorry all across the highway to Esplanade sure is fun!

“And a while ago, a couple of months, perhaps, another friend and I went to a ‘Beautiful Sunday’ programme, a guitar ensemble performance. If I remember right, it was the NUS Guitar Ensemble. They performed a very good selection of music in their one-hour set. They presented classical and classic pieces from different parts of the world. NUS Choir caroling islandwide!

NUS Choir goes caroling!

While most of us rushed to shopping malls trying to get gifts for Christmas, the NUS Choir carolled throughout the Christmas season.

We entertained appreciative crowds at Ang Mo Kio Hub, Marina Square, Centrepoint; and guests at Tanglin Club and Shangri-La Hotel, presented them with a mix of traditional and contemporary carols, and also shared with them the joy of Christmas.

It was indeed tiring for us but it was another unforgettable experience to sing daily for one whole week! And the more challenging part was that the choir was spilt into half so that we could send out two ensembles to sing at two different locations at the same time!

It was not entirely enjoyable to sing on stage with a background of cartoon scenes, but it was still a decent stage! More importantly, we had a bunch of fun-loving audience who sat right in front of the stage throughout our whole performance!

Hmm... yes, this was Tanglin Club. Of course, it was only one of the many locations which we sang in Tanglin club. The guests at the outdoor restaurant definitely did not mind the Christmas warmth we brought to them despite the hot weather in Singapore!

Marina Square was another challenging place for singers!
To us, it felt like all our voices just vapourized once we started singing as it was such a huge venue; and audience were practically EVERYWHERE - from the front of the stage to the floor just above us!
Nevertheless, we did a decent job, and some tourists even asked where we were from after the performance!

Singing at Centrepoint was tricky. It was a totally different experience from Marina Square. Over here, the space was limited as we were at the entrance of the shopping mall; and the audience were so near to us that we could have stretched out our arm and stole a scoop of ice-cream which they were enjoying at Haagen-daz.

I'm sure you can tell from the photo where this place is! It was somehow a nice feeling when we found out that security guards were sent to manage the big crowd!

Lastly, we also caroled at Shangri-la Hotel! It was indeed the highlight of this yearly caroling affair! On both 24 & 25 Dec, we sang for 3 hours in the afternoon and 3 more hours at night (of course there were 15-minute breaks at each location!) at various restaurants and lobbies round the hotel!

On 25Dec, we took a video when we were singing at its VIP Lounge! Interested to watch?

Let's see how exciting week 2 of Genesis Camp was!

Count the no. of shoes for sale at our Dance Theatre!

Zaini said, "For those who don't know, the different length and arc ratio of an eyebrow either makes a person look bright or sleepy..."

Literary Workshop by CFA Associate, Yong Shu Hoong. Our students were introduced to the literary art scene in Singapore and how literary art could inspire performing arts!

Seemed like members from Guitar Ensemble and Chinese Orchestra were enjoying the discussion on how Shu Hoong's poem could be adapted into a music performance!

Dance Ensemble actually took a very different approach for the same poem as Guitar Ensemble and Chinese Orchestra. They had adapted the poem, "The Sobering Age" into a lonely solo dance with minimal music on a bare stage...

Everyone was waiting impatiently for the set-up to be done so that CFA Nite could begin!

First item: the Chinese Orchestra Ensemble!

Exams are doooooooone~
And what comes next? Of course the fun and exciting GENESIS CAMP!

Every year in Dec, almost all our CFA groups participate in this camp in one way or another, so that they can practise for the upcoming NUS Arts Festival, and more importantly, interact and get to know more about each other - both within and beyond their groups!

During this one week, groups not only had their own intensive practices, but also attended mass workshops with other groups, and the informal CFA Nite to showcase their talents.

Already missing those days staying up with friends in halls though the practice ended at 12am? Or the mass walk to Fong Seng for supper after your rehearsal?

Here are some of the highlights!

WORKSHOPS

Wondering why were our guys washing their faces in the Auditorium?

Nope~ they were just learning the correct way to remove makeup/clensing during the Make-up Workshop for Music Groups!

The groups sent out reps to thank Mdm Normah (The lady in white) for conducting this workshop.

On the next day, all the groups gathered again to attend the Film Appreciation Workshop, conducted by Mr. Kelvin Sng.
I'm sure now we know how to appreciate films in other aspects, other than the storyline and hunks/beauties!

RANDOM SHOTS

It was Dance Synergy's Dinner Time!

Seems like our tall Symphony Orchestra President is still very young at heart!

Although Choir did not organize any overnight/day-camps, they still practised regularly.

Wondering why some members from Harmonica Orchestra were always seen practising non-stop!? You'll find out soon!

Symphony Orchestra had a Conducting workshop, taught by their very own Resident Conductor, Mr Lim Soon Lee!

We can see that conducting is really far from easy!

CFA NITE

The informal CFA Nite kicked start with a nice Jazzy intro!

A cute collaboration item by Symphony String and Wind ensemble & Dance Syergy (Sorry, the dancers moved too fast and we didn't manage to capture their faces...)

Some nice Christmas carols by the NUSHO committee, specially for CFA Nite! That's why they were also practising during lunch/dinner break!

Although Rondalla was not under this week's camp, they came to perform at CFA Nite!

They seemed to be very focus...

Although Piano Ensemble did not perform, they did a very good job in introducing what Piano Ensemble really does.

Some more Christmas carols by the choir, who were busy preparing hard for their annual "Sing-till-you-can't-talk" massive carollings around Singapore!

nuSTUDIOS is really serious in what they do! Even a "somehow-not-working" projector switched them into red-alert mode immediately!

But of course, everything went smoothly, they showcased two short and interesting films shot and edited during their Film School earlier this semester. Jazz Band also collaborated with them with a live background music add-on enhancement! (Sorry, everyone was totally engaged in the movie + live background music that no one took any photos!)

...the junior dancers from Dance Synergy! Their moves and the umbrellas fit in so well with the song~

Student Achievement Award 2007

GOOD news to all~

THREE of our CFA groups, NUS Dance Blast!, NUS Choir and NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) won Student Achievement Award (Arts and Culture - Group Category)!

The Award giving ceremony organized by the Office of Student Affairs, was held at Sheraton Towers on 26Oct to celebrate their achievements. Let's take a look~

The NUS Ilsa Tari was invited as a special guest item for the OED staff welfare committee’s Hari Raya lunch celebration on 24 October 2007. Dressed in their impressive glittery costumes, the five dancers presented joget berhari raya to much applause from their appreciative audience.

To me, looking at how they actually did the make up and the hair within 20mins, is more exciting than the performance!

Potpourri concluded on an extremely fragrant note on 17 October at the UCC Theatre. We wish to thank our great supporters (almost a full-capacity concert!) for making the effort to come down and enjoy the music with us. Looks like our months of preparation – oh such grueling mental stamina! – has not been wasted at all. But being hard-core NUSPE-ians, we will only practise harder, and harder, and harder. Watch out for our next concert, TOUCH 2008 on 29 Feb 2008, when once again we will present to you great piano music. It can – and will – only get better!

Dance Synergy - Voices for Hospice

It is not often that we take time out of our busy schedules to stop and think about the less fortunate amongst us and contribute towards making their lives the best we can, as those privileged to get a higher education.

Voices for Hospice gave NUS Dance Synergy a chance to do just that— and more.

NUS Dance Synergy was part of the Voices for Hospice charity concert, October 6, 2007, Victoria Theatre. Our dancers performed Passage, choreographed by Mr. Fan Dong Kai. Together with 12 other music groups, we proudly shared the stage with host Gurmit Singh to entertain Guest-of-Honor, President S.R. Nathan, in a theatre so rich with Singapore’s history.

However, our most heartfelt sentiments lay with the concert’s beneficiaries. We juggled assignments and work with rehearsals but all 19 of us took it in our stride, and in the true spirit of NUS Dance Synergy, gave our sincere best onstage.

Being part of a charity concert is an experience that made us realize how much we could contribute with our passion for dance and how important it is for NUS Dance Synergy to continue sharing this passion with people from all walks of life. All the technical prowess in the world will never replace the heart – and the passion - we have for dance and the joy it can bring to the less fortunate amongst us.

It was an evening of fantastic guitar music, from classical works to modern jazz to familiar pop songs! For those who have unfortunately missed it, hope that these photos would give you some ideas how great it was...

Femme f-altees!!! All the female alto players just before concert. Don’t we all look good? Haha~

During the concert, many were pretty nervous (simply look at their faces in the photo!). Special commendations to the juniors who pulled through the whole thing splendidly despite anxiety attacks, hyperventilation, and almost getting pneumonia!!

GENUS's very own Ge-Nusletters!! Look at how engrossed everyone was with the newsletter. Must be some interesting read! Having slaved over this issue for more than a month, Weilin and Yiteng were glad to finally print, publish and be rid of it.
Haha… just joking! we’re just anxious to move on to the next issue!!

Three members in their prime! After the concert, GENUS members crowded around the foyer to find their friends, family and to receive their flowers. Meanwhile, the 3 seniors from prime one section posed brazenly for the camera.

Sim Chuan, our concert master, playing the bass, seeking some rest and calm away from all the planning for the concert. The 2 days of rehearsals and eventual concert were particularly stressful for him.

Our juniors rock! Funky, enthusiastic, dynamic. What more would we want our juniors to be?

The NUS Dance Ensemble celebrated its 15th Anniversary with a concert which showcased works by 8 choreographers - Shabirul Zaki Ahmad, Julihanna Annuar & Shaun Lee, Kavitha Krishnan, Ryan Tan, Dan Kwoh, Xu Jie and Zaini Mohd Tahir. The 24-member Methodist Girls' School Dance Club was the guest performing group.

The programme featured works of different styles which included contemporary Indian and Chinese dances, contemporary dance, hip-hop and a Javanese-Bali fusion piece. The production involved 91 dancers and was very well received by the audience.

Using traditional movements with a contemporary twist, this dance explored the space of an airwell typically found in Peranakan homes. It was based on Heng Siok Tian's poem, Sayang Airwell.

This new work comprised four distinct pieces - from a peaceful environment, the dancers become lost in their homeland, finally finding harmony with each other in this multiracial society, and building a beautiful home that they could call their own.

Fantasie Passionee by NUS Symphony Orchestra

National Library Plaza

The 84-member NUS Symphony Orchestra entertained the public at the National Library Plaza with popular opera and theatre music, i.e. Bizet's Carmen Suites, Gounod's Faust Ballet Music, Selections from Rodgers' The King And I and Selections from Webber's Phantom of the Opera.

The one-hour concert was led by Foo Say Ming, the Orchestra's Assistant Conductor, who is also a musician with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

The Orchestra was the first group to perform at the National Library Plaza and the performance was part of CFA's ExxonMobil Campus Concerts series.

Can you imagine there are 84 members here!?

Thanks to Exxonmobil, our orchestra managed to stretch further in attracting the public crowd.

You see~ It has attracted such a wide range of audiences...

... and the plaza has even become, P-A-C-K-E-D!

Matriculation Fair is always one of the most vibrant moments of NUS calender every year, where various groups set up attractive booths for freshmen to understand NUS lifestyle.

CFA groups, of course seized this golden opportunity to publicize their groups enthusiastically to the freshies.

Let's take a virtual tour of all our CFA group booths!

MUSIC

The Chinese Orchestra booth was empty?! Nah, they were just too busy talking to freshmen!

Everything about choir was colour co-ordinated! Costumes, booths and even tags! And the ladies were on heels! (Didn't they look like 'pro' cabin crew?!)

Electronic Music Lab (EML) was all about creativity, technology and music!

Did you notice that the 3 guitars in the photo were of different size!?

Now we know Harmonica Orchestra had at least 1 freshman! (Of course they recruite more than 1! They have always been popular!)

Indian Instrumental Ensemble - I'm sure half of the readers couldn't tell which one was veena and which one was tabla! Of course the other two were sitar and violin.

He looked like he was taking a graduation photo - graduated from NUS Jazz Band!

Who can resist a smooth, pretty, slim figure!? Ain't talking about the Plasma screen here, but the beautiful Piano Ensemble President with a welcoming smile!

Notice the plucked instruments at the left side of the photo?! Those are Rondalla instruments, not guitars!

Many voted that Symphony Orchestra had the best booth this year!

Can't you see from the bright smile of wind symphony - they were still excited about their recent Italy trip!

DANCE

The one and only Chinese Dance girl who held the fort bravely

Reputation (and of course the lovely smiles!) spoke louder than the setting of their booth. Presenting to you - the NUS Dance Ensemble!

Here comes the tall and slim Dance Synergy President in a set of nice dance costumes

With their bright Hip-Hop gear, Dance Blast! was difficult to miss in the Matriculation Fair!

Ilsa Tari dancers asked, "Are you artistic enough?"

It was not a bazaar selling dresses and accessories, it was our indian dance booth!

The lion head speaks! Lion dance - a combination of dance, music and art!

THEATRE

I believe if the flyers are of red colour, many would receive it gladly! (For those who don't get it. the writer personally thought that the photo reflected somewhat a chinese new year scene)

Choir - Competition at Thailand, July07

The Third “A Voyage of Songs” International Choral Festival
12 – 16 July 2007
Ambassador City Jomtien Hotel, Pattaya, Thailand

During the summer vacation break, while most students were going through internships, part-time jobs and holidays, we had the most wonderful opportunity representing NUS and participate in the prestigious 3rd International Choral Festival, “A Voyage of Songs”, in Pattaya, Thailand.

Departing at Changi Airport - SiewLing came to send us off!

With a great selection of competition pieces in hand, the choir participated in 2 categories,

Open Mixed Category, conducted by Asst. Conductor, Mr Terrence Toh
Ave Marie Stella - a challenging contemporary sacred Latin piece!
Shima E - a very moving and reflective Japanese song about loneliness and the search for love
Bal-lay Gi - a Filipino war chant complete with bamboo percussion, bringing out the fighters’ spirit and pain

Folklore Category, conducted by our Student Conductor, Mr Adyll Hardy
Yu Yue Hua - a sorrowful Hokkien piece which uses flowers to describe a lady's life
Luk Luk Lumbu - a colorful Indonesian tribal piece, together with choreography and elaborate folklore costumes!

I'm sure you can't tell what this is, coz our dear president Aaron was still fixing it the night before the competition!
It was our self-made bamboo war-drum instrument which was used in Bal-lay Gi.

Practices for the competition were long and arduous, working hard at improving every little detail: the choreography, the musical interpretation, the blending of voices, the notes and right down to the costumes.

Before we knew it, we were at the competition in Pattaya, Thailand. The festival was grand, featuring a total of 33 choirs from 10 different countries, across 4 continents!

The NUS Choir obtained two Gold diplomas in Open Mixed Voices and Folklore category, ranking 6th and 4th respectively. In addition, the judicators were impressed with our performance, Luk Luk Lumbu so much that they selected us to represent Singapore to perform at the closing ceremony!

Take note of their weird-looking beard, our guys put on MAKEUP to look tribal!

During the festival, the NUS choir also interacted with choristers from other nationalities. The choir almost went crazy upon meeting two distinguished composers, Mr. Ralph Hoffman (our seniors won a gold singing his song, Credo in 3rd Festival of Songs in Olomouc, Czech Republic in 2005!) and Mr. Arwin Tan – the very composer of Bal-lay Gi, the Filipino war chant which we sing for this competition!

Ha~ I'm sure you can't tell! The people with a white logo on their left of their Tshirts were actually from The Philippines!

Here was our President, Aaron again with two of the PRC choir girls!

Listening intentively to Mr. Ralph Hoffman, the composer of Credo, seniors' competition piece in Czech Republic!

Mr Arwin Tan actually said, “I’m so moved by your performance! You managed to bring out the exact mixed feeling of glory and pain of war when I wrote the song. I sincerely thank you for the tears you guys shed on stage.”

Of course, we managed to squeeze some time in the last two days to go shopping, travel around Pattaya, and explore its beaches! After the festival, some members of the choir extended their trip to Bangkok, while the rest of the members returned to Singapore.

It's a small world. Here we met Zhou Chong Qing on the plane, the famous DJ of Radio 93.3!

While the trip proved to be five hectic days, it was an experience worth remembering for a long time to come. Recapturing the very spirit the choir had shown on stage during the competition is nearly impossible, but I am sure glad that I was part of something special.

For the first time, we have a blog fpr all pur 21 CFA performing and production groups! Now, we have this place for groups to share with each other what they have been doing, interesting facts about the group (and the members!), "happening" events, and also upcoming events that you wouldn't want to miss!

Hmm, for the first post of this blog, shall we start with what CFA Studios is?

Of course, CFA Studios is the base/headquarters for all our 21 groups to practise/rehearse 365-24-7! It contains...

- a huge Auditorium: with a 2-storey high ceiling and perfect sound-proof doors, it is perfect for orchestras, and sometime ago, lion dance!

- a Practice Theatre: a place where students know it as "the-room-all-the-way-down-the-corridor", it is popular among both dance and music groups.

- 4 Practice Rooms: 2 with mini-grand pianos, acoustic panels and sound proof doors, 1 serves as THE place for Jazz band, and the last one being a favourite pick for music ensembles.

- a "big-yet-cosy" Dance Theatre: Home for most dance groups, with many precious treasures of costumes, accessories and makeup.

- 5 studios: 3 for various music groups' sectional practices, the other two being the secret hiding place for nuSTUDIOS film production and Electronic Music Lab Studio.

- 1 Activity Room: Equipped with two grand pianos, it is the dream place for Piano Ensemble to be at. Of course, other music groups fight for it too!

- a nice Dance Studio: although there are pillars that dancers find them irritating, but choir singers find them extremely friendly to lean on after hours of rehearsals

And most importantly, we are at 10 Kent Ridge Crescent - also the address of this blog!

With Subway, Old Chang Kee and Cheers opposite us; Swimming pool across the road; and UCC only a slope away (although it's a long slope), CFA Studios stands proudly at where it is...
